The iPhone 6 sapphire display is all over the news and like common smartphone owners, even experts are curious about the benefits of the new material. A new report hints the sapphire will be the part of the upcoming flagship handset, and Apple is busy shopping the necessary apparatus to manufacture almost 200 million iPhone 6 handsets.
Well, the most interesting question is how strong Sapphire based display will be?
The company behind Sapphire has been there at MWC last year with iPhone equipped with protector glass made up of the same material. The video below is from that event only, but still will help you realize the strength it would add to the iPhone 6 display.
The company called GT Advanced claims that sapphire based display is almost 2.5 times stronger than Gorilla Glass made up of reinforced glass material. The new iPhone 6 with Sapphire will also scratch resistant and rigorous. In the video, the stuff is so tough that the concrete used is, in fact, splitting up into smaller bits that need to be cleaned off the screen. One thing that is worth noting here is that Sapphire may reduce scratches, but it’s not unbreakable on impact. The company has accepted that Sapphire based display’s breaking or shattering point is greater than that of the Gorilla Glass.
The companies involved in manufacturing smartphone were aware of the Sapphire’s benefit, but Sapphire costs almost 4 times more than Gorilla glass. Now, that technology has brought the manufacturing cost down allowing Apple to set up its Arizona plant for mass production of the material.
